It’s all about fresh, local tomatoes!
From Kymisha, CGC Urban Agriculture Coordinator: "By mid-summer, I’m looking forward to when my juicy tomatoes, which have been slowly ripening on the vine, are finally ready to eat. I make sauces, salsa and ketchup, and I enjoy them in their most delicious form, too: fresh on a bed of lettuce or cooked pasta. I’m proud of what my labor of love is able to produce...but I sometimes wonder if my time and energy is worth it. If you’re like me, maybe it’s time for a second opinion."
That's the origin story of our Tomato Tasting event! Whether you like to grow and show off your tomatoes or you just love a good, juicy garden tomato, this is the event for you.
TASTERS
If you can't get enough of those garden-fresh, peak-season tomatoes, we want YOU to come be a taster! You'll get to sample and rate each entry, help determine each category's winner and even take home a packet of seeds for next year.
Active CGC volunteers (including community gardeners) save $5!
COMPETITORS
Think your prize tomato or secret family recipe is among the best? Enter them to be tasted and rated by local tomatoes lovers! You could win $50—and you’ll finally know if your Better Boys are really better.
There are three categories, each with five entrants and a $50 prize for first place:
Heirloom Category: Tomatoes in this category can be any size or style as long as they are grown from heirloom seeds. Tomatoes should be served fresh for the tasting.
Hybrid Category: Tomatoes in this category can be any size or style as long as they are grown from hybrid seeds. Tomatoes should be served fresh for the tasting.
Product Category: Entries in this category must be a product you make using your tomatoes (e.g., sauces, jams, salsas, baked goods). Entries must be non-alcoholic. You may bring a simple accompaniment for serving if your product requires it (e.g., chips for salsa or crackers for jam).
