Grow Your Own Strawberries

Join Nadia Ruffin, MS, for a hands-on class where you’ll learn everything you need to know about growing your own delicious strawberries! Whether you're a seasoned gardener or just starting out, this workshop will guide you through the entire process—from selecting the best strawberry varieties to planting, caring for your plants and harvesting sweet, juicy berries.

During the workshop, you'll learn:

  • How to choose the best strawberry varieties

  • Soil preparation and planting techniques

  • Tips for fertilizing, watering and pest control

  • Seasonal care, including mulching and frost protection

MEET YOUR INSTRUCTOR:

Nadia Ruffin is an accomplished scientist, agricultural educator and entrepreneur with over 20 years of experience in agriculture, horticulture, animal science, entomology and veterinary medicine. She holds a Master of Science in Entomology from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (2017) and a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture with a focus on Animal Sciences and a minor in Entomology from The Ohio State University (2005).

Nadia has a diverse professional background that spans veterinary medicine, agricultural research, education and community outreach. She is the founder and director of Agricademy Inc., a research institution dedicated to advancing biotechnology, entomology and agritech. Agricademy provides training and outreach to underserved communities, including youth through the Agriplorers Program, which introduces students to agriculture and related career paths. Nadia also leads the Black Empowerment Through Agriculture program, funded by the United Way of Greater Cincinnati, which empowers new and experienced farmers through practical workshops and entrepreneurship training.

In addition to her work with Agricademy, Nadia owns Quiwi Produce, an urban farm in Cincinnati that promotes local food production, food safety, and sustainable farming practices. She also co-owns Blossoms Florist, a family owned floral business that has served the Cincinnati area for over 40 years.

Nadia's commitment to sustainable agriculture and community education has been recognized through numerous awards and grants. She was honored as the Farmer of the Year by the National Black Farmers Association in 2017 for her efforts to teach advanced farming technologies to Black farmers. In 2018, the Cincinnati City Council presented her with a resolution recognizing her urban agriculture initiatives.

Nadia has authored numerous articles for publications such as The Dirt on Organic Gardening and Rodale Inc., where she shared her expertise on entomology and sustainable gardening practices. She has also delivered hands-on workshops on hydroponics, pest management and agricultural entrepreneurship.

Her dedication to fostering sustainable agriculture and community development drives her ongoing work to educate diverse populations and advance agricultural research.

COST: $20 / $15 for active CGC volunteers
