Quercus bicolor
Swamp White Oak
This large tree grows especially well in wet and swampy sites. It can also tolerate drought and urban conditions, making it a good choice for city landscaping.
Oaks are keystone species, and support hundreds of different insects, birds, mammals and even other plants in their community.
Although acorn processing is somewhat involved, acorns have been used a food source throughout human history. Swamp White Oak is said to have especially sweet acorns, excellent for baked goods.
The bark was also traditionally used for tanning and for yellow dye.
