Hop Tree

  • This small native tree is also called the Stinking Ash or Wafer Ash. Its flowers do have an unpleasant fragrance, but its flat round fruits can be used as a substitute for hops in brewing beer.

  • Grows best in full to part shade and well-drained soil.

  • Hop tree is a host plant for the giant swallowtail caterpillar, and its fruits are a good source of food for birds and other wildlife.
