Ptelea trifoliata
Hop Tree
This small native tree is also called the Stinking Ash or Wafer Ash. Its flowers do have an unpleasant fragrance, but its flat round fruits can be used as a substitute for hops in brewing beer.
Grows best in full to part shade and well-drained soil.
Hop tree is a host plant for the giant swallowtail caterpillar, and its fruits are a good source of food for birds and other wildlife.
