Magnolia tripetala
Umbrella Magnolia

  • Clusters of 2-foot-long leaves give this midsized tree its name.

  • It also bears massive creamy white flowers in late spring.

  • Grows well in sun or shade but requires rich, moist soil.

  • It is native to the slopes along Appalachian streambeds but grows well in the Cincinnati area as long as it is kept sheltered and watered.
