Hortus Deliciarum: Nature in Early Music

  • The Civic Garden Center 2715 Reading Road Cincinnati, OH, 45206 United States (map)

From Herrad of Landsberg in the twelfth century to Franz Joseph Haydn in the eighteenth, this indoor concert will explore themes of nature in early music for solo voice and harpsichord on the grounds of beautiful Hauck Botanic Garden. Translations and commentary will be provided to help you more fully experience this glimpse into our musical heritage.

Hortus Deliciarum (Latin for Garden of Delights) was an illuminated encyclopedia begun in 1167 and finished almost two decades later. Intended as a teaching tool for novices at the Hohenburg Abbey, it was compiled by the abbess of Hohenburg, Herrad of Landsberg. Hortus Deliciarum is both the first encyclopedia believed to be written by a woman and one of the first sources from a convent that we have of polyphony—music with two or more simultaneous melodic lines.

This concert will take place in the CGC’s auditorium.

This concert is part of the Cincinnati Early Music Festival.
