Echinacea purpurea
Purple Coneflower
Purple coneflower is a hardy and adaptable summer-blooming native perennial that grows easily in a variety of soil types.
Reaches 2-4 feet tall and 2 feet wide in full sun and well-drained soil.
It bears long-lasting purple flowers that are highly attractive to bees and butterflies.
Can self-seed in the garden, however songbirds will eat most of the seeds.
Drought tolerant.
Traditionally used to treat respiratory infects, sore throats and coughs. It has also been shown to be an immune system booster and have antibacterial qualities.
The spiky seed head was also used by some native tribes as a hairbrush.
Horticulturist’s Notes: Deer will often browse on unopened buds but don’t despair; the plant will respond with more, shorter flowers the last longer into the season.
