Echinacea purpurea
Purple Coneflower

  • Purple coneflower is a hardy and adaptable summer-blooming native perennial that grows easily in a variety of soil types.

  • Reaches 2-4 feet tall and 2 feet wide in full sun and well-drained soil.

  • It bears long-lasting purple flowers that are highly attractive to bees and butterflies.

  • Can self-seed in the garden, however songbirds will eat most of the seeds.

  • Drought tolerant.

  • Traditionally used to treat respiratory infects, sore throats and coughs. It has also been shown to be an immune system booster and have antibacterial qualities.

  • The spiky seed head was also used by some native tribes as a hairbrush.

  • Horticulturist’s Notes: Deer will often browse on unopened buds but don’t despair; the plant will respond with more, shorter flowers the last longer into the season.
