Castanea dentata x mollissima
Hybrid Chestnut
Because the American Chestnut tree has been virtually wiped out by a blight, healthy existing chestnuts are now almost all Chinese hybrids.
These trees quickly grow very large and do best in well-drained soil.
Chestnuts are rich in fats and carbohydrates with a sweet, creamy flavor. Nuts are ripe in fall and store well through winter.
Strong, rot-resistant wood was traditionally used for fence posts and log cabins.
Horticulturist’s Notes: Chestnut shells are extremely sharp, so use care when walking underneath or harvesting from these trees!
