Plenty of Thyme on My Hands

Thyme is a member of the mint family and a close relative of oregano and basil. A perennial native to the Mediterranean region, it has a history of growing wild and is used in many culinary dishes. It was even used by the Ancient Egyptians for embalming. And thyme has many benefits for us to explore today.

Whether you plant it for culinary or ornamental purposes, all varieties of thyme are considered to be edible. From seasoning meat to soups to sauces, it’s one of the most popular herbs used in culinary circles. One of my personal favorites is to create a compound butter using Lemon Thyme or Common Thyme to add to dishes.

Since thyme is loaded with phytonutrients, minerals and vitamins, there are a vast array of health benefits. Here are five medicinal benefits to remember:

  1. When prepared as a tea, thyme is known to lower blood pressure and cholesterol, reduce headaches and settle your stomach after a hearty meal.

  2. Infusing a carrier oil with fresh thyme and rubbing it on your temples has been known to help boost concentration and lift your mood.

  3. When added to witch hazel, thyme can be used as a toner to help clear acne.

  4. As an antiseptic, thyme can help guard wounds against infections. When made into a tincture, it can speed up healing.

  5. When prepared as a tea, the antibacterial oils in thyme help reduce mucus buildup in the nasal passages and chest congestion.

Remember to check with your doctor before using thyme medicinally, especially if you have any preexisting conditions or are taking any medications!
