Berberis aquifolium
Oregon Grape Holly

  • This evergreen shrub is native to the Pacific Northwest.

  • It grows 5 feet tall and wide in shady, moist, rich sites.

  • It has sharp, glossy leaves and fragrant yellow spring flowers.

  • Edible yet sour blue berries form in late summer.

  • Will spread through suckers to form colonies or reseed into the garden.

  • Horticulturist’s Notes: Oregon Grape Holly needs more acidic soil than what is typically found in Cincinnati. Amend with ammonium sulfate and lots of organic matter to keep plants healthy.
