Berberis aquifolium
Oregon Grape Holly
This evergreen shrub is native to the Pacific Northwest.
It grows 5 feet tall and wide in shady, moist, rich sites.
It has sharp, glossy leaves and fragrant yellow spring flowers.
Edible yet sour blue berries form in late summer.
Will spread through suckers to form colonies or reseed into the garden.
Horticulturist’s Notes: Oregon Grape Holly needs more acidic soil than what is typically found in Cincinnati. Amend with ammonium sulfate and lots of organic matter to keep plants healthy.
