Hydrangea macrophylla
Big Leaf Hydrangea

  • This rounded shrub grows to 3-6 feet tall and wide, although hundreds of cultivars exist.

  • It is native to China and Korea and can be notoriously hard to grow well in the Cincinnati area.

  • Big leaf hydrangea requires afternoon shade and rich, consistently moist, deeply mulched soil.

  • It produces enormous round flowers in the summer.

  • Horticulturist’s Notes: These hydrangeas will produce blue flowers in low pH soil and pink flowers in high pH. Amend with ammonium sulfate and lots of organic matter to achieve blue flowers.
