Hydrangea macrophylla
Big Leaf Hydrangea
This rounded shrub grows to 3-6 feet tall and wide, although hundreds of cultivars exist.
It is native to China and Korea and can be notoriously hard to grow well in the Cincinnati area.
Big leaf hydrangea requires afternoon shade and rich, consistently moist, deeply mulched soil.
It produces enormous round flowers in the summer.
Horticulturist’s Notes: These hydrangeas will produce blue flowers in low pH soil and pink flowers in high pH. Amend with ammonium sulfate and lots of organic matter to achieve blue flowers.
