Hydrangea arborescens
Wild Hydrangea

  • Native to the Appalachian Mountains, this loosely branched shrub grows to about 4 feet tall and produces long-lasting large white flowers throughout the summer.

  • It has been bred into dozens of showy cultivars, but the straight species is most attractive to pollinators.

  • Grows best in part shade and moist, acidic soil.

  • Horticulturist’s Notes: This hydrangea blooms on new wood and can be cut low to the ground in late winter to encourage vigorous new growth.
