Hydrangea arborescens
Wild Hydrangea
Native to the Appalachian Mountains, this loosely branched shrub grows to about 4 feet tall and produces long-lasting large white flowers throughout the summer.
It has been bred into dozens of showy cultivars, but the straight species is most attractive to pollinators.
Grows best in part shade and moist, acidic soil.
Horticulturist’s Notes: This hydrangea blooms on new wood and can be cut low to the ground in late winter to encourage vigorous new growth.
